The Upper Peninsula is a virtual paradise for birders. There is a mix of northern boreal birds as well as many species at the north and east extremes of their range. Any serious birder should consider the UP to be a must-visit. One unique aspect of staying at Kemosabe is that being in the center of the UP allows you to drive to many different points of observation throughout the UP.
- The Jack Pine forests neer Gwinn and Rapid River have hosted the rare Kirtland's Warblers for a few years.
- In Marquette, in the summer, Merlins, Goshawks and other birds of prey breed. In the winter rare gulls and owls inhabit the harbor.
- Sault Ste. Marie is one of the best spots to see far northern species like the Gyrfalcon, Snowy owl, and Hawk Owl.
-
Whitefish point in the northeastern UP is the best spot for viewing migrations in the spring. Huge flocks of raptors and waterfowl pass by.
- Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Eastern UP consists of wetlands and is a haven for birds. Bald Eagles, Ospreys and Loons abound as do species such as LeContes Sparrow and Yellow Rail.
